The Verdant Cauldron Sect had stood for a thousand years, a beacon of healing and orthodox alchemy in the Eastern Reaches. Today, it was burning. The scent of roasted spiritual herbs, usually a source of tranquility, was masked by the suffocating stench of charred flesh and spilled blood. The Crimson Moon Sect had descended from the skies like a plague of locusts, their blood-red robes a stark contrast against the peaceful green pavilions of Jin’s home.
Jin, a seventeen-year-old outer disciple and pill-sweeper, scrambled through the collapsing corridors of the grand Alchemy Hall. He was covered in soot, his grey robes torn, clutching a jade wooden box to his chest as if his life depended on it. In truth, the life of the entire continent might depend on it. He had a weak Wood spiritual root, rendering him unable to concoct anything above a rank-one blood-clotting pill. He was a nobody. Yet, his master, Elder Su, had thrust this box into his hands just moments before a Crimson Moon elder’s flying sword severed his head.
“The Vault, Jin! Take it to the Vault! If they claim the Ashen Lotus, the Eastern Reaches will become a graveyard!” Elder Su’s final, blood-choked words echoed in Jin’s mind.
Tears carved clean tracks down Jin’s ash-smeared face, but he did not stop running. He could hear the screams of his fellow disciples echoing from the main courtyard. The Crimson Moon cultivators were slaughtering everyone, harvesting their cultivation bases to feed their demonic arts. Jin’s weak Second Stage Qi Condensation cultivation was nothing but a flickering candle in a hurricane.
He reached the back of the grand hall, slamming his palm against a hidden sequence of jade tiles. The wall rumbled, sliding away to reveal the sect’s deepest secret: the Ancestral Vault. Jin threw himself inside just as the ceiling of the hallway collapsed in a shower of burning timber and shattered jade. The heavy stone doors sealed shut behind him, plunging him into absolute darkness, save for a faint, unnatural glow coming from the box in his arms.
Jin collapsed onto the cold stone floor, gasping for air. His lungs burned. He was trapped. There was no other exit from the Ancestral Vault. The Crimson Moon Sect would eventually clear the rubble and breach the doors. It was only a matter of time.
He looked down at the jade box. It was covered in intricate, pulsing sealing runes. The heat radiating from it was intense, making the jade warm to the touch. Elder Su had called it the Ashen Lotus. It was a primordial flame, born from the absolute destruction of a heavenly tribulation thousands of years ago. The sect founders had spent centuries trying to tame it for alchemy, but it was too destructive. It didn’t purify herbs; it annihilated them, turning even the most vibrant spiritual energy into dead ash.
A thunderous boom shook the vault. Dust rained down from the ceiling. Outside, the Crimson Moon elders were already battering the protective arrays.
“They’re going to break in,” Jin whispered, his voice trembling. He thought of Elder Su, of the kindly herb masters who had shared their steamed buns with him, of the young disciples who had just begun to dream of immortality. All gone.
Another boom, louder this time. A hairline crack appeared in the massive stone doors. Red light spilled through the fracture, accompanied by the malicious laughter of demonic cultivators.
A desperate, insane thought took root in Jin’s mind. The flame destroyed everything it touched. The enemy wanted it to forge weapons of mass slaughter. If they got it, Elder Su’s death would be in vain.
“If it destroys everything,” Jin muttered, his eyes hardening with a terrifying resolve, “then let it destroy me.”
With trembling hands, Jin broke the sealing runes on the jade box. The lid snapped open.
Instantly, the temperature in the vault skyrocketed. Sitting on a bed of blackened spirit stones was a flame the size of a fist. It was shaped perfectly like a blooming lotus flower, but it possessed no normal color. It was forged of swirling grey ash and deep, pitch-black fire. It didn’t emit light; it seemed to consume the darkness around it.
The stone doors began to buckle.
Jin didn’t hesitate. He reached out, grabbed the Ashen Lotus, and shoved it into his mouth.
The pain was not immediate. For a fraction of a second, it felt like he had swallowed a block of ice. Then, the flame reached his stomach, and Jin’s world erupted into an abyss of agony. He screamed, but no sound came out because the air in his lungs had instantly vaporized.
The Ashen Lotus did not burn his flesh like mortal fire. It targeted his spiritual essence. Jin felt his weak, green-glowing Wood spiritual root wither and snap, reduced to cinder in a heartbeat. His dantian, the center of his cultivation, cracked and shattered. The black fire surged through his meridians, incinerating the pathways that carried Qi.
He was dying. He was being erased from the inside out.
Suddenly, the heavy stone doors of the vault shattered inward. Three Crimson Moon elders strode into the room, their eyes hungry for the sect’s ultimate treasure. But instead of a pristine jade box, they found a young boy writhing on the floor, his skin cracked and glowing with an intense, terrifying black light.
“The fool swallowed it!” one of the elders roared, stepping forward. “Rip him open and extract the flame before it dissipates!”
Before the elder could touch him, Jin’s eyes snapped open. They were no longer human eyes. They were twin pools of swirling, ashen fire. A shockwave of pure, destructive heat exploded from his body. The three elders didn’t even have time to scream. The black flame washed over them, turning their flesh, bone, and spiritual energy instantly into a pile of fine grey ash.
Jin’s consciousness faded into the dark, his last sensation being the Ashen Lotus settling into the ruins of his dantian, replacing his destroyed spiritual roots with something entirely new, and terribly dark.
